Music Monday: “In a Sentimental Mood” by Hank Jones

“I am the sum total of everything that I have experienced musically.”
~ Hank Jones

“… when you listen to a pianist, each note should have an identity, each note should have a soul of its own.” ~ Hank Jones

Hank Jones is one of my favorite jazz pianist. I think I have lost count of how many times I have found myself listening to and enjoying the background piano accompaniment on a recording only to discover that it is Hank Jones that I am keying in on. He  provides the fundamental background on such great albums as Cannonball Adderley’s Somethin’ Else, Dizzy Gillespie’s Portrait of Duke Ellington, and Prez’s Laughin’ to Keep from Cryin’.

Jones’ sound is always elegant and soulful, “sophisticated blues.” What could be better on a cold December morning.
