Music Monday: “Passion Flower” Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges

“Never the world’s most highly animated showman or greatest stage personality, but a tone so beautiful it sometimes brought tears to the eyes—this was Johnny Hodges. This is Johnny Hodges.” ~ Duke Ellington

Johnny Hodges was a key part of Duke Ellington’s orchestra for years and is featured on many of Ellington’s most famous recordings.

Benny Goodman once said that Hodges was “by far the greatest man on alto sax that I ever heard.” And even Charlie Parker acknowledged how much Hodges influenced his work.

Here is a great clip featuring Duke Ellington on piano and Hodges on the alto.

Enjoy!
