In 2009 I underwent a long operation to repair my spine. My years in the NBA had taken their toll, and my spine had collapsed. I was in so much pain that I lived on the floor of our San Diego home and considered killing myself as my only way out. The surgeons, my wife, Lori, and the Grateful Dead’s music—especially “Standing on the Moon”—saved me.
