I began the year with a plan to review a single album each week. But these past few weeks I have found myself having difficulty concentrating on just one album. And so this week I am posting here three albums I have found myself alternating between.
Duke Ellington Piano Reflections
Two tracks in particular stand out, and I have returned to them again and again this week: “Melancholia” (which was featured this week on Music Monday) and “Reflections in D.”
The Art and Soul of Houston Person
“Funny Valentine” and “Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance” are wonderful. Person used a number of piano players on the album, so it is difficult to figure out who played on what tracks. The piano on “Funny Valentine” is outstanding.
Mingus Ah Um
A book, of course, could be written on how great this album is. All I can add to any discussion of this legendary album by Mingus is, “Better Git It in Your Soul.” ’nuff said!
