Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Pete Rose

On September 11, 1985, at Riverfront Stadium in front of 47,237 hometown fans, Reds’ player-manager Pete Rose collected his 4,192nd career hit to pass Ty Cobb. Cobb had actually had his last at bat on the same date 57 years earlier. With his 4,191st hit, Rose became the all-time major league hit leader.

Pete Rose is banned from baseball and hence from the Baseball Hall of Fame for betting on baseball. A just sentence in my opinion

Flash forward now 39 years. Turn on a game of baseball and you will be inundated by commercials for various gambling sites and locations. In pursuit of more revenue, Major League Baseball in now sponsored by a number of gambling outlets like FanDuel and MGMGrand. My local team’s broadcast, the Minnesota Twins, is brought to me by a local casino.

What happened? Late-Stage Capitalism. Absolutely everything is a potential profit stream that needs to be exploited. So what if sports gambling will inevitably compromise your sport. In the short-term there is profit to be made.

I still believe that Pete Rose should be banned from Major League Baseball and from the Baseball Hall of Fame. But if I was him, I would be pointing out the hypocrisy of the current situation.
