I am a little over two months into “The Year of the Short Story” and I thought I would check-in.
As of the morning of Saturday, February 8th (when I am writing this post), I have read 101 different short stories. Yes, I am keeping a record.
My goal has been to read two short stories a day knowing that somedays I would fall short and on others I might be able to read more.
I have to admit though, that I am surprised how quickly I got to 100 and doubt I will be able to maintain such a pace. Nor do I think it would be a good idea. But for now, I am having a hell of a good time.
A lot of what I am reading at this time are Golden Age short story Mysteries. I can either find them on Gutenberg or check them out digitally from my local library. Since they are digital, I can read them on my iPhone as well as my Kindle Scribe.
So, 100+ short stories in, what am I learning?
- I am relearning that I love short stories.
- That short stories are the perfect literary companion for our Distracted Age.
- That there are a lot of very good writers that I have neglected for far too long.
- I am reconfirming what I have long suspected, most novels are largely filler to get to the page length that publishers demand.
