Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Choosing What to Read

I have admitted here before that I am an “Indiscriminate Reader.” I read what catches my fancy. And if the book is free, even better.

I routinely pick up any Kindle freebies that catch my eye. Over the years, I have found some very enjoyable reads that way. And, to be fair, some very dreadful ones as well. But since I am also a “Serial Abandoner” it all works out.

Choosing which Freebies I want download to my Kindle Scribe to read means making choices. Here is the the basic criteria I am using at this point in my reading life:

  • No books featuring FBI Agents, FBI Profilers, or Serial Killers
  • No books with Navy Seals or ex-Navy Seals
  • No books featuring snipers
  • No books featuring slashers, rapists, child abusers, etc.
  • No books with “Girl” in the title (I have not even liked the huge NY Times Bestsellers with “Girl” in the title)
  • No first book in a long Fantasy Series
  • No Post-Apocalyptic books (been there, done that)

Now, what will always catch my eye?

  • Any Scandinavian Noir book
  • Any book that takes place Underground
  • Any book with a Victorian setting
  • Any book featuring a Haunted House or Ghost
  • Any book that is a reprint of an overlooked or forgotten writer from the late-19th and early-20th century

These are the criteria that come immediately to mind. Obviously there are others.

How about you? How do you pick which books you are going to take a chance on?
