Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Scott Erickson

On April 27th, 1994, Twins right-hander Scott Erickson no-hit the Brewers 6-0 for Minnesota’s first no-hitter since 1967.

Scott Erickson actually pitched more seasons for the Orioles (7) than he did for the Twins (6). But he will always be a Twin in my mind because of his no-hitter and the role he played in the 1991 Twins World Series run. In 1991, Erickson led the American League with 20 wins. He finished a distant 2nd in Cy Young voting that year to Roger Clemens.

In 1998, Erickson also led the American League in Complete Games with 11, and in 1999 led the league with 3 Complete Games.

For the Twins, Erickson wore the number 19. I remember noticing that fact some time during the 1991 season. It seemed like the perfect number in a year that was a mathematical palindrome.

I remember numbers in life by associating them with uniform numbers: 3 is Daryle Lamonica or Babe Ruth, 5 is Brooks Robinson, 9 is Ted Williams, etc… The only other player I associate with the number 19 is another Baltimore guy, Johnny Unitas.
