Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

The Rocket

On April 29th, 1986,  Roger “The Rocket” Clemens set a major league record by striking out 20 as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1.

How great was Roger Clemens?

  • Led the league in Wins 4 times
  • Led the league in ERA 7 times
  • Led the league in Shut Outs 6 times
  • Led the league in innings pitched 2 times
  • Won the Cy Young Award 7 times!

Clemens even won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1986 (an award generally considered for everyday players NOT pitchers!).

And yet, like Barry Bonds, the Rocket is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame because of alleged/suspected Performance Enhancing Drug use.

To me the Steroid issue is quite clear. Either NO player from that Era should be in the Hall of Fame or Bonds, Clemens, and Alex Rodriquez should be.

Here are some players from the Steroid Era who were suspected of using performance enhancing drugs and/or admitted to doing so, BUT were still voted into the Hall of Fame:

  • Mike Piazza
  • David Ortiz
  • Ivan Rodriguez

Clemens, Bonds, and Rodriquez are clearly head-and-shoulders better than these three.
