Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Carlos Correa

On June 8th, 2015, Carlos Correa played in his first Major League Baseball game.

Since shortstop Carlos Correa plays currently for my local nine, the Minnesota Twins, I get to see him play regularly. When he and Byron Buxton are healthy, I don’t think there is a better shortstop-centerfielder combination in the game.

Correa has an absolute cannon for an arm. And though he is tall for the position, 6’4″, he is incredibly quick.

The problem for Correa is not ability but health. He has all the tools to be a Hall-of-Famer, but the question for him will always be his health. He has bad feet and legs. (Something I can relate to.)

The history of baseball is filled with guys who have had the tools, drive, and commitment to be Hall of Fame players but have unfortunately been stuck with bodies that cannot take the toll, or have just had incredibly bad luck.

Sports medicine has come a long way. Hopefully for Correa (and Centerfielder teammate Byron Buxton) it can figure out how to keep C-4 healthy for another 10 years.
