Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Sam Hope

On August 5th, 1907, Philadelphia Athletic Sam Hope pitched in his first. Major League game. In one third of an inning, he gave up 3 hits and one unearned run. He never pitched in another Major League game.

Sometimes for Major League prospects, a “cup of coffee” only lost a few minutes. For Sam Hope in 1907, it was less than an inning when he gave up three hits apparently to three straight batters.

Imagine finally getting your chance to fulfill a life-long dream and when the moment comes, you have the single worst day of your life. That happens to a lot of people in a lot of areas in life. Baseball just happens to be the only place where everything is recorded.

According to Baseball Reference, Sam Hope was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 4th, 1878. At the age of 28, he made finally made a Major League roster. Unfortunately, for some reason, Hope had a terrible outing. He never got another chance to redeem himself. His Major League career was over.

According to Baseball Reference, he lived almost 40 more years. How often over the years did he think about that bad day at the office? Did he make peace with that moment? Or did it haunt him the rest of his days?
