Writing this as I am in late June, I am merely guessing at the direction my Local Nine, the Minnesota Twins, have gone. I suspect though it has not been pretty.
The Twins in late June are considered the slowest team in the Major Leagues. With the exception of Byron Buxton and Harrison Bader the starting offensive players for the Twins are too slow to steal bases, go first to home on a single, or bunt for a hit. All they can do is hit homers and doubles.
In my humble opinion, the Twins are built wrong for the current game. They are also not always that fun to watch. They lack the ability too often to manufacture runs. And here in late June, it is showing.
Teams that bunt and steal have the capacity to disrupt things. To make things happen. They can score even when no ball is hit over an outfield fence or even out of the infield.
While I hope that in late August things have changed and the Twins have found their groove and are playing winning baseball, I am pessimistic that that will be the case.
In late June, I am thinking it is time for the Twins to go in a new direction. To start drafting and trading for speed and for moxie. In 2025 speed wins. And it is a hell of a lot more fun to watch than guys just swinging for the fences.
