Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

Gaylord Perry

On August 23rd, 1982, Seattle pitcher Gaylord Perry (and future Hall of Famer) was ejected in the seventh inning of a 4-3 loss to the Red Sox for doctoring the baseball. It was the first time in his 20 Major League seasons that the self-proclaimed spitball king had been bounced for that offense.

Gaylord Perry was a great pitcher and the “Master of Head Games.” His elaborate mound ritual was designed for exactly one purpose: to get into the batter’s head. He did it so well that he managed to win 314 games in his Hall of Fame career..

Perry pitched for 10 different teams over 22 seasons. He won 2 Cy Young awards and made 5 All-Star Games. He led the league in Wins twice, and complete games twice. He was both a character and a complete stud. Here is a link to his Baseball Reference page.

Finally, here is a great video showing his eccentric pre-pitch ritual. We will never see another quite like him.

Enjoy!
