Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

SOME 2025 Regular-Season Numbers to Ponder

Now that a month has passed and the regular season dust has fully settled, it is time to look at a few of the 2025 Regular Season numbers that contributed to a poor season for my Local 9, the Minnesota Twins.

Let’s start with one of my favorite plays in baseball, the Sacrifice Bunt. Last season as a team the Twins successfully pulled of a sacrifice bunt a woeful 4 times. That’s it.

Here are my personal heroes:

  • Kody Clements, 2 times
  • Mickey Gasper, 1 time
  • Jhonny Pereda, 1 time

For a team that seemed to make it a habit out of leaving Runners in Scoring Position and/or starting a game with a Byron Buxton lead-off Triple, you would assume the Sacrifice Bunt would be a regular part of the Twins’s game. Nope! Even after the big salary dump and the team finally discovering the Stolen Base and more aggressive Base Running, the Twins failed to exploit this time-honored, classic play. Terrible!

Here are the numbers now for the teams with the least number of Sacrifice Flies in 2025:

  • Pittsburgh Pirates – 32
  • Minnesota Twins – 34
  • Colorado Rockies – 35
  • Los Angeles Angels – 35
  • OAKLAND Athletics – 35
  • Chicago White Sox. -35

Now let’s look at the teams with the worst Win/Loss Records in 2025

  • Colorado Rockies – 43 wins / 119 losses
  • Chicago White Sox – 60 wins / 102 losses
  • Washington Nationals – 66 wins / 96 losses
  • Minnesota Twins – 70 wins / 92 losses
  • Pittsburgh Pirates – 71 wins / 91 losses
  • Los Angeles Angels – 72 wins / 90 losses

Now compare the list of Worst Records with the list of Fewest Number of Sacrifice Flies. It is no accident that they are so similar.

Teams that Sacrifice Bunt and hit Sacrifice Flies are teams that are practicing situational hitting. They are paying attention to score, men on base, the situation they are in. They are playing baseball. Not just trying to hit baseballs.

Let’s hope that new management takes a look at these same numbers.
