Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

SHORT STORY REVIEW: “Who Killed Father Christmas?” by Patricia Moyes

Patricia Moyes (1923-2000) was born in Dublin. She is best known for her Inspector Henry Tibbett Series.

This is the first Moyes story that I think I have ever read. And it was a good one. I found it in the anthology Merry Murder.

“Who Killed Father Christmas?” can best be described as sort of a Locked-Room Mystery. It takes place in a toy department at Christmas time of a large London department store. The narrator is a college student who is earning extra cash working part-time, something he has done for a few years now.

When Father Christmas is found murdered, stabbed in the back, the police are called in and the staff of the toy department and the manager are interviewed.

There are a few really fine twists in this little story. In fact, I liked it so much that I have added Moyes to my list of writers to be further explored.
