Growing up I regularly watched Saturday matinee movies on television with my brother and my cousins on winter and rainy days. If it was summer, or the weather good, we were expected to be outside in the afternoons, out of the way of my mom and my various aunts. But if the weather was bad, we gathered to watch classic B&W Horror movies with Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Godzilla, King Kong, and the Mummy.
Mummy movies were my favorite. I still remember my favorite line from my favorite Mummy movie: “He who defies the gods will die a cruel and violent death.”
I suspect that my attraction to the Mummy movies was in part my fascination with archeology and also (to be honest) because Mummies always seemed like the least frightening of all monsters. As a 10 year old boy who was one of the fastest students in his class, I knew I could easily out run the shuffling mummies who threatened the damsels in distress and the heroes of the movies.
Mummy MegaPack is a collection of classic Mummy short-stories. I checked it out from my local library and read it on my Kindle. Anyone acquainted at all with the Amazon-Kindle marketplace knows that these kind of short-story anthologies are numerous on Amazon. Most sell for .99-cents. I checked it out. But again, it would be well worth .99-cents.
The writers represented here are quite varied. Ranging from Edgar Allen Poe (who you would expect in any collection of old horror stories) to Louisa May Alcott (!). The quality of the stories is also quite variable. There was only one I did not like and could not finish (I think it was “The Book of Thoth” by Lafcadio Hearn). Overall though the stories are entertaining and the quality of the writing quite good.
If you like short stories (as I decidedly do) and Mummy movies, I highly recommend it.
