Why Baseball, Books, and the Grateful Dead matter

How the Hell Did We Get Here?

On September 1st, 1989, Eight days after banning Pete Rose from baseball for life, Commissioner Bart Giamatti dies suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 51

This summer Major League Baseball announced that Pete Rose was back on the eligible list for Hall of Fame voting even though he broke the cardinal rule of the game, he bet on baseball.

The number one reason apparently for the change to Rose’s lifetime ban is reported to be the support he has from Donald Trump.

For more than a decade now, one refrain goes constantly through my head: “How the hell did we get here?”

A criminal and a traitor in the White House selling phones and bitcoins and access. A guy who actually bet on baseball games his team was playing in getting a chance to enter the Hallowed Halls of the very game he betrayed.

How the hell did we get here?

  1. i always felt that Rose belonged in the HOF, always wanted the hall of fame to chronicle all aspects of baseball, including its trespasses and what not, to explain it so kids know baseball is not all roses.

    1. I had not thought of it that way. History is an ugly mess at times. Trying to remove uncomfortable history is probably not the answer. Do you feel the same about Clemens, Bonds, A-Rod, etc?

      1. Oh definitely. I want all the corruption and cheating and lies to be available to kids, not to turn them cynical, but so they can know the whole story, baseball roses and ruin.
