I spend a great deal of time on Substack these days, following a number of good writers and substacks. It goes through my mind occasionally that maybe I should be doing what I am doing on Substack instead of here.
But here is the problem, the dilemma I face as a writer, a reader, a student, and as a blogger: I am just interested in too many things.
Let’s “count” the things I like to write about OR have written about over the years:
- Baseball History
- Poetry & Poets
- Book Reviews
- Westerns
- Horror
- Classic Adventure
- Pulp
- Nordic Noir
- Hardboiled Detective Fiction
- Comic Books
- Gothic Fiction
- Western American History
- World War II History
- Vietnam War History
- Korean War History
- Theology
- Short Stories
- Coffee
- Beer
- Sports
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Soccer
- Minnesota
- Typewriters
- Montana
- Art
- Birds
- Music
- The Grateful Dead
- Jazz
- Classic Country
That is just the tip of the iceberg. Hence, the root of the dilemma I continue to find myself facing on a regular basis.
What am I interested in now? What do I want to read about now? What has most of my attention now?
And ultimately for me as a blogger, what do I want to write about now?
I could start reviewing the albums I have been listening to with so much attention these past few months.
I could go through my 500+ drafts from previous blogs, update them, and repost them. That would mean posts about everything on my list above, and more.
But for now, it is a familiar dilemma that experience has taught me eventually does go away. An in-betweeness that is as uncomfortable as it is no doubt necessary.
